Durdan's Park Primary School

Modern Foreign Languages

At Durdan’s Park, we recognise that learning a foreign language is a necessary part of being a member of a multi-cultural society and provides an opening to other cultures. As a school, through the teaching and learning of French we focus on equipping our children with the necessary skills to enable them to become global citizens.

We recognise that high-quality languages education should foster children’s curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable children to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. At our school we aim to provide our children with the foundations for learning further languages, equipping them with the skills required to study and work in other countries.

At Durdan’s Park French is delivered in the following ways:

Children have weekly lessons in French throughout Key Stage 2, using the recently purchased Language Angels scheme of work. The objectives of our teaching are based on the requirements of the National Curriculum programmes of study for Key Stage 2. This scheme provides clear progression for the development of speaking, listening and vocabulary acquisition. There are resources to support the teaching and learning opportunities for pupils.

Units covered within the scheme are: about France, animals, musical instruments, fruits, vegetables, shapes, colours, numbers the seasons and also some historical units.

It is our intention that when children leave Durdan’s Park Primary, they will have a natural curiosity and confidence to explore other countries, cultures and languages. We encourage them to appreciate that in a multi-lingual society it is a valuable skill to be able to communicate effectively with others in another language.  We aim to inspire, enthuse and equip them with the necessary skills and in order for them to continue language learning at High School.

Impact:

Through our teaching of French we will see the impact of the subject in the following ways:

  • Children will be able to communicate with each other and their teachers in French.
  • Children will enhance their language learning by developing an understanding of the French culture.
  • Children will understand that a language has a structure, and that the structure is changeable from one language to another.
  • Children will expand their knowledge of the language through the development of the four key skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing.
  • Children will transfer to High school successfully and will be keen and willing to continue and develop their language skills.
